The Sanquhar castle holds a numinous presence and I returned to it multiple times to photograph during my stay for a Scotland artist residency in that city. After the castle had fallen into disrepair some of the stone was used to rebuild the Sanquhar Tolbooth, an 18th century Baroque structure used at one time for a prison. Later, it became the seat of the town council and remained so well into the late twentieth century; it is now a museum. What was most striking about the building was that it was lined with flower boxes filled with orange and yellow begonias, drooping with creeping jenny and a white flowering creeper, and interspersed with blue lobelia. The boxes frame the iron railings and made the building even more of a centerpiece to the town. Artist's proofs and limited edition prints are available.
