QUILTS – CELLULAR AUTOMATA – with MICHAEL CHUPA

We developed composites of photographic source material and 2D renderings of one-dimensional Second-order Cellular Automata (CA). We observed that some second-order CA renderings exhibited similar repeating patterns of dark and light seen in bark striations. For one quilt series, we photographed aspen, birch, oak, pine, sycamore and locust tree bark looking for line and form that harmonize with the CA output. CA rendered lines and shapes, most dominant among them a repeating triangle, pierce the photographic image through luminance masks. Resulting linear elements are further emphasized with metallic quilting thread. Another Cellular Automata pair Florautomata and Faunautomata juxtapose the cellular automata form and the biomorphic in ways that emphasize the difference in their structures.
